You can choose Krakow but you'll waste quite a lot of valuable time on commuting.

If you wish to see a beautiful mountainscape from your window and stay close to trailheads, then consider staying in one of the below Tatra Mountains resorts.

I've divided this post into Polish and Slovak Tatra National Park. There are some differences between those two parts of the Tatra Mountains - read here to decide which one would be better for you.

Now, let's make your vacations delightful by choosing the best location for you to stay in the Tatra Mountains.

6 best Tatra Mountains resorts

TATRA MOUNTAINS POLAND

You're probably planning to visit several places in south Poland - great idea! It's the most interesting part of the country and there are lots of beautiful and meaningful towns and mountains.

Let's have a look at the best places to stay in Tatras.

Zakopane

View of Zakopane in Poland

One of the most famous Tatra Mountains' resorts.

Is Zakopane worth visiting?

Yes, but not in the summer.

In July and August, the Tatra Mountains along with all the nearby resorts are brimming with travelers.

Nowadays, Zakopane is probably the most famous place in Poland. It's close to trailheads and ski slopes and full of non-hiking attractions.

Its fantastic location attracts many tourists. If you have no other option and plan on visiting Zakopane in the summer, book your stay well in advance.

You may check more detailed info about this famous Polish mountain resort here.

Here are my suggestions for hotels in Zakopane. I've checked the ratings, reviews, and location and read about the amenities each hotel offers.

Here are the best options:

A picturesque village divided from Zakopane by forest.

If you're not interested in pubs and museums and all you dream of are hikes in Tatra Mountains - Murzasichle is perfect for you. There's peace and quiet. Definitely less popular than Zakopane but located in close proximity to Tatra National Park. There are also ski lifts.

Murzasichle is the second highest-located village in Poland. It sits at 820–950 metres and offers great views of the Tatra Mountains.

It's a fantastic option for those who travel by car. If you're going to travel Poland by trains and buses, choose Zakopane.

Pretty mountain village located just several km from Zakopane. It's a fantastic option if you want to stay close to trailheads and prefer quieter locations - it's less touristy and crowded than Zakopane. In fact, Kościelisko is one of the smallest Tatra Mountains resorts.

Kościelisko will be perfect for you if you're planning to travel by bus - it's very easy to get there from Zakopane.

Also, it's a great option if you want to hike in Western Tatra Mountains - Kościeliska Valley, Chochołowska Valley and Czerwone Wierchy.

Wierchowa Chata - beautiful mountain-style hotel located super close to the ski lift. Guests appreciate the mountain view, helpful staff and nice garden with a big children's playground.

TATRA MOUNTAINS SLOVAKIA

Slovak Tatras are my personal favourite. Tatra Mountains in Slovakia are higher and trails are less crowded. As you can see below, the majority of Tatra National Park belongs to Slovakia.

There are also lots of fun waterparks.

On the other hand, prices in Slovakia are a bit higher than in Poland - we Poles still have PLN currency, whereas in Slovakia you pay with Euros.

And it's easily accessible - you can get there by car or električka train.

Another advantage of staying in Zuberec is that it's close to the Tatralandia waterpark. Tatra Mountains: hiking

I'd risk a statement that the Tatra Mountains offer the best hikes in Europe.

But OK, I haven't hiked in every mountains in Europe (so far) so can't say for sure 😉

Anyway, if you'd like to get to know this beautiful region, have a look at some of the best hikes in Tatra Mountains:

Tatra Mountains: skiing

chopok cable car

If you'd like to try skiing in Tatra Mountains, then you can practically choose whichever mountain resort - they all have good ski infrastructure.

In the High Tatras, prices of ski passes are quite similar to European ski resorts in the West but in Western Tatras or Low Tatras, skiing is cheaper.

We usually go skiing in Poland. It's relatively cheap in the Beskidy Mountains - my favourite are Szczyrk ski resort and Białka Tatrzańska in south Poland.

I've tried skiing only in the below Tatra mountain resorts:

Weather in Tatra Mountains

poland tatra national park

One thing's sure - it's unpredictable.

You can expect snowfall in September or ice on a trail in June. Storms come quickly and are violent, especially in August. The weather may change in the blink of an eye.

It happens often that it's sunny and warm in the valleys but up in the mountains above 2000 metres, it's cold, cloudy and windy.
